Multi-million pound regeneration schemes for Wallsend town centre, including a new Customer First Centre, which includes a state of the art library and customer services facilities, new Aldi supermarket and drive-through Burger King restaurant, and a major refurbishment of The Forum shopping centre and public toilets, as well as new housing for the town.
A new J D Wetherspoon pub, formerly The Ritz Cinema, has also opened with great success and will feature a new outside seating area.
The new Aldi site will include a large 214-space car park, available to town centre shoppers, providing two hours free parking.
The ongoing £100m redevelopment of the former Swan Hunter shipyard will also bring additional footfall to the town centre.

NewRiver Retail is delivering the new Aldi and Burger King drive-through and has also completed the extensive internal and external revamp of The Forum shopping centre.
We have shaped and steered the supermarket and fast food restaurant development by helping to put the land together for redevelopment, co-ordinating the development process and engaging with local residents and businesses to make sure the public benefit from the developments.
Why is it being done?
Until the regeneration schemes started, the town centre had been declining and crying out for investment for a number of years.
The developments are putting the heart back into the town centre by creating an enhanced, vibrant shopping centre complemented by state of the art local facilities and new housing.
What has already happened?
The Forum Shopping Centre
A series of refurbishment works on the Forum Shopping Centre have been completed or are due to be completed, which include:
- Major roofing works
- Replacement of damaged glazing throughout the mall
- Full decoration of the mall itself
- Decoration of the lower car park and outside lighting
- All mall lights have been upgraded to LED standard
- Repairs to the Terrazzo flooring
- All outside signs have been replaced and decorated
- A new ‘John Street’ facade, including render work
- Renovation of the customer toilets
- New paving outside the customer toilets
- Decoration and installation of power points to the bandstand ready for it to be used for events
- Specialist cleaning of the paving on Station Road and installation of new seating
- Refurbishment works to the indoor market which is now being fitted out by the new market operators for 52 market traders
The town’s former police station and temporary housing centre in High Street East were recently demolished to make way for 41 new affordable homes.
Major regeneration works have also been completed at Wallsend Parks, which included restoration of the lake, watercourses, play areas, bandstand and the entire Richardson Dees Park grounds, restoring the attraction to its former glory. Visitor numbers are dramatically increased since the work and have resulted in an attractive park and facilities for local people and visitors to the town.
What else is going to happen?
Five disused shops in Bedford Avenue which have stood empty for a number of years are to be converted into five, one-bedroom apartments as part of a £270,000 investment.
When will it be finished?
The new Aldi, Burger King and town centre car park, is due for completion in November 2016.
The housing development on the former Police Station site is due to finish in Autumn 2016.
