Freedom of Information (FOI)

Requesting information

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 gives you the right to request information we hold.

Sometimes we may refuse to provide information. This is because disclosure of information could:

  • breach confidentiality
  • contravene the Data Protection Act 2018 or the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
  • impact health and safety
  • disrupt the effective conduct of public affairs
  • harm the economy or commercial interests
  • harm the environment
  • interfere with law enforcement and investigations

If we decide to withhold information, we will tell you why and explain your rights of appeal.

Make an FOI request

Before contacting us, please check our disclosure log. Someone may have already made the same request.

Your request must:

  • contain as much information as possible
  • include your name and contact details

You don't need to give a reason for requesting the information but you may need to pay a fee. If a fee applies we will let you know.

We have a duty to supply all requested information within 20 working days of you making the request unless it is exempt under the Act. If the information is exempt we will let you know.

Schools FOI requests

If you want to request information from a school you will need to contact the school direct. This is because schools are independent and control their own data. Please see the schools section for contact details.

If you are unhappy with our service

Once you receive your response, you have the option to challenge it if you are not happy. To do this you need to request an internal review. You have 40 working days after the date you receive the response to do this.
