Domestic abuse

Housing Advice Team

North Tyneside Council’s Housing Advice Team provides a free, confidential service to anyone who may be experiencing housing issues and is in need of housing advice.

What is domestic abuse?

Domestic abuse can happen to anyone at any time. It is any form or incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse by one or more people aged over 16 years to another person. Abuse can include physical, sexual, financial, emotional, and psychological. The relationship can be between partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality.

Controlling behaviour is a series of acts that make a person dependent on another person by isolating them from their family, friends and other support networks. Financial exploitation may happen, which reduces the ability for independence, and opportunity to escape the behaviour.

Coercive behaviour is a pattern of acts including assault, threats, intimidation, humiliation or other forms of abuse that can harm, frighten or punish a person.

If you are experiencing domestic abuse or violence  or think you might be, the Housing Advice Team can provide advice and support and help you find emergency housing if you cannot stay your own home.

Sanctuary scheme

If you would like to remain in your own home and it is agreed that it is safe for you to do so, then a series of safety measures could be installed in your home to increase security. The Housing Advice Team is able to provide more information on this
