North Shields Cultural Quarter

Funded by North of Tyne Combined Authority, we are developing the North Shields Cultural Quarter which is located in and around Howard Street and Saville Street, in the heart of North Shields, creating a cultural corridor and stronger connections between the town centre and the Fish Quay. 

The heart of the Cultural Quarter will be the cluster of buildings at the crossroads of Howard Street and Saville Street including The Exchange, the Globe Gallery, the Business Centre (Saville Exchange), and the North Shields Customer First Centre.

Cultural and Creative Grant Fund 
The purpose of the Cultural and Creative Grant Fund is to enable businesses within the North Shields Cultural Quarter to secure funding, that they would otherwise struggle to access due to the requirement to provide match funding e.g., Arts Council grants that require 10% match funding. 

The grant must contribute towards the delivery of a creative output which could take the form of:

• a physical piece of art
• a digital projection
• a poetry, play, dance or music performance for stage, TV or radio
• an outdoor arts activity; or a community event.

This should be seen or exhibited to an audience in the Cultural Quarter contributing to the development of the local economy.

A maximum of 10 grants to support projects within a minimum amount of £3,000 and a maximum amount of £10,000 available to each applicant.

Call for Event Proposals 
We are inviting proposals for cultural and creative events within the Cultural Quarter. Up to £10,000 is available per event. 

This could be a play, dance or music performance for stage, TV or radio, an outdoor arts activity, or a community event. This should be seen or exhibited to an audience in the Cultural Quarter contributing to the development of the local economy.

Generator North East, in partnership with North Tyneside Council, are delivering bespoke business support for cultural and creative start-ups and existing businesses in, or looking to relocate in, the North Shields Cultural Quarter with diagnostic / business reviews, advice on structures, funding and bid-writing support, business planning and adaption.

Collaborating with local partners Artist’ Agency North Shields will provide bespoke local mentoring opportunities to local creatives and organisations. 

Artists’ Agency will supply facilitated support for creatives living and/or working across North Tyneside with greatest benefit to North Shields CCZ.

What type of mentoring is available?

Artists are invited to select what will work best for them depending on the individual support they need or would like to access. Mentoring opportunities available to get involved with include:

• Thematic networking events- Based on what is important to local artists, come along to one our events to spend time with like minded people, discuss issues which affect the sector and hear from experts
• Critical Friends- Join one of the peer support groups exploring  ‘wicked problems’ in a coaching style group with one another to develop solutions 
• 1:1 Mentoring- sector specialists will be bespoke matched with up to 6 individuals requesting 1:1 support (with bursaries and paid mentors)
• Co-Mentoring- A buddy system to swap support. Expertise will be paired together dependent on individual needs to support one another, share knowledge and skills development.
• Time to Think- Facilitated critical conversation with artists involved in the programme to review mentoring in North Tyneside
