Carbon footprint

What is a Carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact your activities have on the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced through the burning of fossil fuels and is expressed as a weight of CO2 emissions produced in tonnes. We know that Housing is one of the biggest contributors to the production of CO2 emissions.

Why do we need to act now?

The climate emergency is a real and significant threat. Communities, the environment, and the economy will be severely affected if we don’t make significant changes to the way we live, work, and move around.

In July 2019 North Tyneside Council declared a Climate Emergency, setting a target to reduce the carbon footprint of the Authority and the Borough by 50% by 2023 and to become carbon neutral by 2050.

The Authority is clear in its commitment to tackling the Climate Emergency and has taken a number of steps to deal with this. At the end of 2019/20, the Authority’s carbon footprint had decreased by 46% since the baseline year of 2010/11. Given this current performance, it is likely that the Authority will achieve the 50% reduction target by the 2023 target date.
