Frequently asked questions

The temporary bus lane that was in place during the closure of Killingworth Road slowed traffic on Benton Lane, how will this be avoided?

The new bus lane and enhanced walking and cycling provision with a new shared pathway will be in addition to the two southbound lanes already along the A188 Benton Lane. As shown in the plans above the two lanes leading into Newcastle will remain in place, the new bus lane and shared path will be constructed on the current grass verge immediately next Benton Lane.

The new additional bus lane has been installed to make bus journeys more reliable.

How will you mitigate the loss of some trees on A188 Benton Lane?

To accommodate the bus lane and shared path on Benton Lane, it was necessary to remove the trees and grass verge immediately next to the new constructed bus lane.

As shown on the above plan, new trees have been planted to replace the trees that were removed. This will result in a net gain of trees and biodiversity within a pleasant open space that also includes a swale (a sunken area for rain to collect), wildflowers and benches.
