About the scheme
The Wash, Squash and Recycle campaign is funded by the Department of Communities and Local Government's Weekly Collection Support Scheme.
Washing recyclable items means there is less contamination in your bin.
Squashing your recycling, such as bottles, means there is room in your bin to recycle even more. Recycling one plastic bottle saves enough energy to power a 60W light bulb for six hours. In fact, it takes 500 years for a plastic bottle to decompose.
Changing our thinking forms part of the council waste awareness and recycling incentives campaign.
Spot prize competition
All residents that make a pledge to Wash, Squash and Recycle are invited to enter a monthly prize draw.
Each month one lucky resident will be selected at random to win £100 worth of shopping vouchers.
The name and ward area of the monthly spot prize winners – along with the name of the winning school picked at random every half term – will be published every month.
Wash Squash and Recycle Roadshow
Recycling roadshows are held across the borough. They will offer on the spot advice, raise awareness of waste minimisation and give residents the chance to make a pledge to recycle more.
The roadshows will have different themes:
- theme 1 will focus on waste awareness and minimisation, e.g. Love Food Hate Waste
- theme 2 will focus on Wash, Squash and Recycle
The roadshows will also provide opportunities to pick up some free gifts.
