Biodiversity areas

Our biodiversity areas and plan

Newcastle and North Tyneside Biodiversity Action Plan deals with priority habitats and species in the Newcastle and North Tyneside area, which are considered to be under threat locally and nationally.

The plan aims to manage our natural environment effectively and protect these natural resources. This supports the national 'Plantlife' campaign endorsed by Alan Titchmarsh.

Due to the national decline of bees, butterflies and other important species, we want to create more biodiversity across our borough. Locations have been carefully selected to provide a home and food for butterflies, bees, birds and small animals.

These areas will be left to flourish during the summer months, allowing important grasses and wildflower to grow, flower, and set seed. Once the flowers have set seed, mowing will take place in October.

To further increase biodiversity, some sites will have small areas of wildflower seeds sown.

Fish Quay banksides

The Fish Quay banksides are located along the mouth of the Tyne estuary at North Shields. The area extends from Union Stairs, along Tyne Street through to Brewhouse Bank.

This area is designated green space and is part of an important wildlife corridor along the River Tyne.

The Fish Quay Bankside Management Plan aims to maximise the Fish Quay's biodiversity and conservation values and ecourages the local community to work with us.
