Civil marriages and partnerships

First things first

If you want to marry or form a civil partnership, both you and your partner must:

Contact us on 0191 643 6164 to book a wedding / civil partnership ceremony and discuss making an appointment to give legal notice.

A notice is:

  • valid for twelve months after the superintendent registers it
  • only valid for the venue on the notice - if you change your mind you'll both need to give new notices and pay another fee
  • £42 for each notice (per person) payable by credit or debit card

We will:

  • display the notice at the register office for 28 clear days, so you must give at least thirty days notice
  • then issue an authority for the marriage/partnership

If the marriage/partnership is in a church, you must either:

  • collect the certificate and take it to the church where the event will take place
  • ask us to post the certificate to your home address, for you to deliver to the relevant church

If the minister doesn't have the authorities before hand, your marriage/partnership might be delayed or postponed.

Marriage Schedule System

On Tuesday 4th May 2021 the way in which weddings are registered changed with the implementation of the Marriage Schedule System. The system will move away from the current paper marriage register to registration in an electronic register.

The changes will apply to all weddings in England and Wales regardless of where the wedding is held (i.e. Register Office, church, religious premise, or approved premise).

 The Marriage Register

  • Couples will no longer be invited to sign a marriage register.
  • The register will be replaced with a Marriage Schedule, which is an A4 document which will be signed by the officiants, the couple, and their witnesses.
  • After the ceremony the information contained in the Schedule will be entered into an electronic register.

The Marriage Certificate

Couples will not receive a marriage certificate on the day of the marriage. These will be processed in a specified timescale by the Registration Office in business hours for collection/postage in line with the couple’s choice.

Parents’ details

The electronic register will allow for the names of up to four parents (mother/father/parent/step-parent) for each partner to be included in the marriage entry and on marriage certificates, instead of only fathers' names as is currently the case.

Ceremony choices

The changes outlined above will not affect your ceremony choices so your ceremony can go ahead as planned.

You will be provided with more details at the time you give your notice of marriage.

Marriages in Religious Premises (not Church of England)

The Marriage Register

  • Couples will no longer be invited to sign a marriage register.
  • The register will be replaced with a Marriage Schedule, which is an A4 document which will be signed by the officiants, the couple, and their witnesses.

The Marriage Certificate

  • Couples will not receive a marriage certificate on the day of the marriage.
  • The relevant person from the Religious Building or their representative will be expected to return the signed schedule to the Register Office in the District where the marriage took place within 21 days.
  • The details of the marriage will be entered onto the electronic marriage register within the following 7 days and only then can a Marriage Certificate be issued.
  • Marriage Certificates will be available from the Register Office service in the area where the marriage took place.

You will be provided with more details at the time you give your notice of marriage.

Church of England Marriages

The Marriage Register

  • Couples will no longer be invited to sign a marriage register.
  • The register will be replaced with a Marriage Document, which is an A4 document which will be signed by the officiants, the couple, and their witnesses.
  • The Marriage Document will be issued by the Minister at the Church where the marriage is taking place.

The Marriage Certificate

  • Couples will not receive a marriage certificate on the day of the marriage.
  • The Minister or their representative will be expected to return the signed Marriage Document to the Register Office in the District where the marriage took place within 21 days.
  • The details of the marriage will be entered onto the electronic marriage register within the following 7 days and only then can a Marriage Certificate be issued.
  • Marriage Certificates will be available from the Register Office service in the area where the marriage took place.
