A vital sea defence in Whitley Bay is being strengthened.
Southern Promenade, which runs parallel to Rockcliffe Gardens, is to be reinforced.
It is the latest step in North Tyneside Council’s multi-million pound investment in revitalising the coast at Whitley Bay and the project forms part of the Ambition for North Tyneside strategy.
In recent years the council has breathed new life into the iconic Spanish City, completed a revamp of both Central Lower Promenade and Northern Promenade and delivered a number of high-quality housing developments.
The repairs to Southern Promenade, which are being funded by the Environment Agency, will include infilling a redundant stairwell to create a continuous seawall, which will help reduce the risk of future storm damage.
Subject to other projects progressing as planned, works are expected to start mid/late July and last around 10 weeks, with working hours between 7.30am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.
Cllr Carl Johnson, cabinet member for Environment and Transport, said: “The Southern Promenade seawall is an important sea defence along Whitley Bay’s coastline.
“Our efforts will help prevent further damage to the seawall, thus securing its long-term future.
“This is another important step in our Ambition for North Tyneside vision which sets out how we hope to help shape the borough and make sure it is fit for the future.”
Members of the public won’t be able to access Southern Promenade while the work is being carried out. Ahead of the works getting under way, the construction team will set up a compound on Rockcliffe Gardens.
Guides will be marked on the footway next to the compound to enable pedestrians to pass safely and in line with social-distancing guidelines.
There may be times when a crane is required to lower materials onto the promenade. When the crane is in operation, pedestrians will be temporarily diverted on to the opposite side of Rockcliffe Gardens for their safety.
