North Tyneside parks awarded eight Green Flags

North Tyneside’s award-winning parks and green spaces have once again been recognised among the finest in the country.

The Rising Sun Country Park, Benton Quarry, Marden Quarry, Killingworth Lakeside Parks, Wallsend Parks, Northumberland Park, and Chirton and Redburn Dene Parks have been honoured with a prestigious Green Flag Award from Keep Britain Tidy.

Preston Cemetery, a first-time winner in 2022, has retained its Green Flag award from last year.

The Friends of Brierdene won the Green Flag Award Community Award for the work they do to maintain the Brierdene Wildlife Site in Whitley Bay.

The award is the international benchmark of quality in a park or open green space and is given out each year to parks which meet the very highest standards.

A record 2,216 UK awards have been announced today by Keep Britain Tidy, ranging from world-famous city parks to small, local green spaces.

The achievement underscores North Tyneside Council's commitment to providing residents and visitors with top-quality parks and open spaces, and the authority has now picked up 79 Green Flag awards since 2005.

Councillor Hannah Johnson, Cabinet Member for the Environment, welcomed the news. She said: “We are delighted to have achieved Green Flag status yet again for so many of our parks and green spaces.

“The awards are only possible because of the way the council and community work together and it is an amazing achievement.

“The Green Flag lets residents and visitors know that they can expect the very highest standards when they visit one of our parks or green spaces, and I’d like to congratulate everyone involved in their upkeep on another year of success.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd MBE said: “I would like to congratulate everyone in North Tyneside for achieving the award.

“These are vital green spaces for the community in North Tyneside, bringing people together and providing opportunities to lead healthy lifestyles. The staff and volunteers do so much to ensure that it maintains the high standards of the Green Flag Award and everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.”

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
