Another two North Tyneside organisations have been rewarded for reducing their carbon footprint, helping to make the Borough cleaner and greener.
The NBT Group in Killingworth, which uses technology to help businesses with their supply chains, and the Earsdon and Wellfield Community Association have both been given ‘Gold’ Carbon Reduction Awards.
Launched in 2023 by North Tyneside Council, the awards recognise organisations who are committed to reducing their carbon footprint, in line with the Council’s own ambitious aim to be carbon net zero by 2030.
The NBT Group has reduced their carbon footprint by 31.5% by:
Streamlining deliveries and reducing long distance runs
Amending lighting and heating plans
Reducing paper usage
No longer using plastic liners in office bins
Making staff aware of carbon emissions
The Earsdon and Wellfield and Community Association has reduced their carbon footprint by 28% by:
Installing heat recovery ventilation systems
Programming individual rooms to be warm only when in use
Lowering the temperature of rooms if physical activity is taking place
Rearranging schedules so multiple rooms aren’t being used at different times of the day for short periods.
Councillor Sandra Graham, Cabinet Member for tackling the Climate Emergency said: “I’m delighted that more businesses are taking steps to try and help us in our goal to be carbon net zero by 2030.
“The award is a great way for businesses to not only help the environment, but to also help themselves become more sustainable and profitable.
“I would strongly recommend other organisations to follow in the same steps as The NBT Group and the Earsdon and Wellfield Community Association. Some of the changes they’ve made are small, but they’re having a huge impact and will benefit their organisations and those living and growing up in North Tyneside”.
Joanna Green, Sustainability and Carbon Reduction Project Manager at NBT Group said: “Our efforts to understand and reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions at our headquarters, Albrecht House in Killingworth, have been driven by the incredible dedication of our team.
“The team's unwavering commitment embodies the heart of our mission, driving tangible progress as we work towards a more sustainable future.
“Our aim is to achieve carbon neutrality over the next 12 months and then move towards becoming carbon positive”.
