Rise in number of 16–17-year-olds in employment, education or training in North Tyneside

Numbers of young people staying in education, employment and education in North Tyneside is higher than regional and national levels*.

New data from December 2024 revealed that 94.1% of 16-17-year-olds in the Borough are classed as in EET (Education, Employment or Training) and just 2.6% are classed as NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training).

The data reflects the dedication of the Council to ensuring young people leaving school have opportunities to progress and develop new skills.

This includes work experience programmes, volunteering opportunities, work-based learning programmes and enrichment programmes.

A dedicated Employment and Skills Service is on offer too, with Connexions Advisers supporting school leavers with information advice and guidance, Working Well hubs securing employment opportunities and Adult Learning Courses designed to support people to widen employment prospects.

The service works closely with local businesses to create more apprenticeship opportunities for young people and an increase in the numbers of Supported Internships are providing young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) with valuable work experience and opportunities to progress to independence that includes employment.

Cllr Steven Phillips, Cabinet Member for Inclusion, Employment and Skills at North Tyneside Council, said: “The fact our figures for the number of young people not in either education, employment or training in our borough are significantly lower than regional and national data is not accidental.

“In North Tyneside we are committed to supporting young people into adulthood and we know that doesn’t look the same for everyone.

“We have a vast range of opportunities and schemes in place, from supporting apprenticeships and work-based learning to online and in-person training and qualifications.

“This matched with wrap-around support to overcome barriers to access mean we’re continuing to see lower numbers of young people leaving school and not accessing further opportunities. “
