More modern and sustainable bus shelters are starting to be installed in North Tyneside, replacing existing bus shelters at various locations in the Borough.
Around one-third of bus shelters in North Tyneside will be renewed at no cost to the council. This is thanks to a contract with ClearChannel UK who will install and maintain the renewed shelters and who can generate revenue from advertising space on select shelters. Other bus shelters in the Borough continue to be maintained by Nexus on behalf of the council.
This upgrade will support comfort and convenience for passengers and support the Council’s ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
Living roofs will be fitted to some of the renewed bus shelters. These are plant-covered roofs, creating a mini habitat for pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and other insects. They will enhance biodiversity and contribute to the council’s climate change ambitions.
The modern design of these shelters will help to highlight public transport options and help encourage people in the Borough to choose sustainable travel options.
Cllr Hannah Johnson, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “These new bus shelters mark an exciting step forward in making public transport more appealing and accessible for people across North Tyneside.
“Not only will they enhance the passenger experience, but the living roofs will help us in our efforts to protect the environment.
“We’re committed to ensuring our Borough remains a great place to live, work, and visit, and highlighting greener travel options is a key part of that.”
Will Ramage, Managing Director at Clear Channel, said: “We look forward to working with North Tyneside Council, delivering modern, sustainable bus shelters that enhance the passenger experience while supporting their environmental goals. By incorporating features like living roofs, these shelters go beyond providing a practical waiting space. They contribute to biodiversity, improve urban aesthetics, and align with the Council’s climate ambitions.
“As a long-term partner to communities across the UK, Clear Channel is committed to delivering high-quality, sustainable infrastructure that benefits both residents and the environment. We look forward to seeing these new shelters play a role in encouraging greener travel choices in North Tyneside.”
