Members of the public will be able to share their views on how North Tyneside will look in the future, following Cabinet’s approval to begin public consultation on the vision and options for a new Local Plan.
The new Local Plan will be a long-term strategy and policy tool that will guide where development occurs in North Tyneside up to at least 2042.
The new Local Plan will ensure the Borough continues to grow sustainably, protecting important green spaces whilst responding to the need for more affordable housing and economic growth.
It considers national policies and guidance, responding to local issues and priorities in North Tyneside – especially those in the Council’s ‘Our North Tyneside Plan’ – strengthening the unique qualities that make North Tyneside a great place to live, work and visit.
Preparation of the new plan will involve multiple stages of public consultation in 2025 and 2026, and the plan is expected to be ready following a public examination in January 2028.
This initial consultation outlines a vision for sustainable growth in the Borough that tackles inequalities, the climate emergency and prioritises protection of green spaces and wildlife habitats. It presents the key planning issues and important information such as the number of new homes North Tyneside will need in the future, but this stage does not set out detailed policy or identify specific proposals for development.
This stage of consultation also gives residents the opportunity to suggest Local Green Space and places where development could go, in order to meet housebuilding targets and the future needs of the Borough. The next phase will involve consultation once appropriate and viable sites have been identified.
Feedback from this consultation will inform the next phase of the Local Plan and will ultimately shape how North Tyneside will look and grow in the future.
Consultation will begin on August 11 and run for 8 weeks.
Information about the consultation will be available through a range of online and printed sources available in the Community Hubs and Libraries.
All information, including details of in person consultation events will be on the Council’s engagement hub, Our North Tyneside Voice .
Final proposals will be considered by Full Council in 2026, before being submitted to the government for examination in public prior to the new plan’s expected adoption in 2028.
