North Tyneside has appointed its first National Leader of Governance (NLG) to provide support to secondary schools and colleges.

Tracey Booth, Chair of Governors at Churchill Community College in Wallsend, has been recruited by the National College of Teaching and Leadership to help schools looking to improve the leadership and performance of their governing body.

The role will involve supporting other schools and colleges through coaching and mentoring, reviewing the responsibilities of the governing body, action planning, supporting academy conversation and advising on reviewing headteacher performance.

The NLG role has been introduced as part of the Government’s plan to give schools a central role in developing a self-improving and sustainable school-led system.

Over the last few years Tracey has helped Churchill Community College to secure an ‘outstanding’ Ofsted report. The school has continued to improve and was rated number one secondary school in the North East for value added in 2015. She has also encouraged the school to provide significant support to other schools, whilst taking on additional roles to support governing bodies.

Commenting on her new role Tracey Booth said: “It is a great honour to be selected to take on this role. I chair an outstanding secondary school and I am dedicated to ensuring each and every one of our students does the very best they can.

“I thoroughly enjoy the role and this new designation gives me a chance to help other schools by strengthening their governance capacity.”

Cllr Ian Grayson, cabinet member for children, young people and learning at North Tyneside Council, said: “We congratulate Tracey Booth on her new role. Churchill Community College has a fantastic track record and it is great that Tracey is able to share her skills and experience to support other schools and colleges.”

Churchill Community College is also a Teaching School – helping to develop innovative and high quality approach to teacher training, staff development and school improvement – and a National Support School, which increases the leadership capacity of others schools to help raise standards.
