Libraries in North Tyneside are becoming a hub for young coding talent.
Once a place people just visited to loan books, libraries now host regular coding sessions for people of all ages, but mostly children, looking to develop their skills.
Over the last two years, ‘Let’s Code’ events have enabled attendees to experiment with some of the latest technology and now they’ll be able to continue that at home too with a new ‘micro:bit’ lending scheme.
A Micro:bit is a small handheld, programmable computer used to help teach younger people how to code.
From Monday 10 February, special programming kits will be available to borrow at North Shields, Wallsend, Whitley Bay and Killingworth Libraries, and will be free of charge to library members for up to four weeks hire.
The next family micro:bits workshop will take place on Thursday 20 February between 2.30pm and 3.30pm at North Shields Customer First Centre. Children will be able to code their own game of ‘Frustration’. The event is £1 per child and is suitable for children eight years and over. Further events are also planned at Easter.
