North Tyneside libraries are giving children free books in exchange for World Book Day tokens to inspire a love of reading.
North Shields and Wallsend Community Hubs and Libraries will be official token exchange hubs, giving away hundreds of books to encourage children to read.
From February 13 to March 22, kids can swap their £1 World Book Day token for a selected book (while stocks last). Tokens are distributed via schools, early years providers, and children’s magazines.
To add to the celebrations, North Shields Library will host a special ‘meet the author’ event for local schools, featuring Jack Jackman, author of Maisie vs Antarctica.
Councillor Hannah Johnson, Cabinet Member for Libraries, said: “We’re excited to be part of this year’s World Book Day celebrations, ensuring every child has the chance to enjoy a book of their own. This is a wonderful opportunity for children to discover the magic of reading, and we hope it inspires a love of books that will last a lifetime.”
Cassie Chadderton, CEO of World Book Day concludes: “With reading for pleasure at its lowest level since 2005, our charity’s mission to change lives through a love of reading is more vital than ever. We are grateful to The Foyle Foundation, The Julia Rausing Trust and our partnering publishers for their generous support to help bring books to children across the country. We look forward to seeing more children enjoy their reading adventures this World Book Day.”
